QUINTA DO COLMEAL: EXCLUSIVE HOLIDAY HOUSES

Quinta do Colmeal (The Beehive Estate) is situated in the Alentejo region at the same latitude as Lisbon. This area is the largest of Portugal, an extensive, southerly part of the country between Central Portugal and the Algarve coastal province.

It also borders Spain and is well-known for its traditional landscape, its rich regal history, its olive trees, cork oaks and wines, for its florid springtime and warm summers. The autumn is dominated by the olive crops and wisps of smoke.

In everyday language ‘quinta’’ means ‘one fifth’ and is the name of an estate of some size. If the estate was larger than 5 hectares, but smaller than 100 hectares, one fifth of the crop had to given to the king.

The Quinta is amidst a large area of natural beauty and is located at 3 kms from the town of Vila Viçosa, which is rich in history and has been the countryseat of Portuguese princes for centuries. It neighbours the 800- hectare hunting grounds of previous sovereigns and indeed, is still frequented by the current Spanish king to this day.

Within its ancient walls the large estate is excellently suited to enjoy maximum privacy and relaxation. As a haven of peace it fulfils all conditions to unwind.

QUINTA DO COLMEAL: THREE CASAS & SWIMMING-POOL

The access path surfaced with marble gravel leads to a gate which opens on to a surprisingly playful and personal composition in a scenery.
In the immediate vicinity one can visit towns and villages, each with its own appealing history: Vila Viçosa, is a well-preserved, small town with 9,000 inhabitants. It is renowned for its rich history as a royal countryseat and is also the centre of white and pink marble which is quarried at some distance. The former railway station houses a marble museum. Also of great interest are Borba, Estremoz, Elvas and Alandroal.

At a distance of 25 kms the splendid Lake Alqueve, the largest reservoir, is situated. It is 87kms in length and covers a shoreline of well over 1,000 kms. Endless opportunities for water sport enthusiasts present themselves here.
